--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

W: Good evening, sir. Here is your menu. Would you like to order something from the bar?
D: How about a whisky, on the rocks.
W: Fine, sir. I'll be back in a moment to take your order. Here is your drink, sir.
D: Thank you. I'm ready to order now. But I'd like to ask -- are there any dishes that the chef recommends today?
W: The seafood is very good today. We just got the delivery this morning, so it is very fresh.
D: Sounds good. I'd like to have some wine with my meal. What do you suggest?
W: For seafood, a white wine of course. Our house wine is quite good -- Italian.
D: Good. I'll have a glass of the house white then.
W: Would you like some dessert, sir?
D: No thanks. But I would like some coffee, please.
W: Very well. Was the meal satisfactory?
D: Very good. Could you please bring me the check with the coffee? Thanks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

on the rocks 加冰块

People usually have whisky on the rocks, because the ice cubes help to make the taste smoother.

take one's order

Many restaurants don't say what their house wines are -- only "red" and "white"; your waiter will have more details if you want.

1. Would you care for anything to drink?
2. Will you be ordering anything from the bar?
3. Would you like to see our wine and spirits list?
4. Would you like to order something from the bar?

order"在此是‘点(餐或酒)’的意思;"bar" n. Would you like to...?"

1. I'm ready to give my order now.
2. I've made my selection.
3. I've decided what I'll be having this evening.
4. I'm ready to order now.

所以,当服务生走近时,若你已看好想要的菜,就可直接说 "I'm ready to order now."。"be ready to" 是‘已准备好(去做...)’ 若是还没有决定点什么,则可说 "I'm not ready to order yet."。

1. Is there a special of the day?
2. Do you recommend any particular dish?
3. Is there a house specialty?
4. Are there any dishes that the chef recommends (today)?

(A) Would you like to order something?
(B) Do you want to order something?

(A) I'll be back in a moment.
(B) I'll be back later.

(A) 句中的 "in a moment" 是‘片刻、马上’之意,同 "in a minute (second)"。譬如 "I'll finish my work in a moment."(我马上就把工作做完。) 若是服务生说 "I'll take your order later.",你就得有心理准备,他大概很忙,你可要等一阵子了。

(A) Are there any dishes that the chef recommends today?
(B) Are there any dishes that the chef suggests today?

譬如你想请以前的雇主‘推荐’你给一家新公司,可以说 "I'll ask my ex-boss to recommend me to you.";可是你以前的老板可能会向对方 ‘建议’"I suggest to you that he is very tough"(我给你的建议是,他很强悍)。
